Summary:

This presentation summarizes the study: The African Diaspora in the U.S. and its interaction with Biodiversity conservation in Africa. In so doing, it attempts to present the issue from an African Diaspora perspective and perception by the conservation community, highlights past trends in other fields in terms of collaboration between these and provides parallels of concerns as they relate to the subject; parallels that could be opportunities for development of a synergy; and, proposes a contribution to the way forward.

Babacar MBow is an independent scholar whose work focuses on bridging academy and community knowledge. He has widely published on African Diaspora, Culture and sustainable Development, Education and Philosophy of interpretation and culture. MBow served for 11 years as the Broward County Libraries Division International Programs Exhibits Coordinator. He is the Director of the Florida Africana Studies Consortium in Miami. A consultant for several international agencies and African states his books include: An Idea of Modernity in Haitian Contemporary Art (2008), Benin: a Kingdom in Bronze (2004) Cultural Identity in Haitian Contemporary Art (2011). MBow is also the Managing Editor of the three-volume Encyclopedia of the African Diaspora (Oxford, ABC-CLIO 2008). His new book: The End of the Postcolonial African State is forthcoming 2014.
