The Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) is a community conservancy membership organization that supports 39 member conservancies across 42,000 square kilometres of northern and coastal Kenya. NRT helps empower communities to develop locally-led governance structures, run peace and security programmes; take the lead in natural resource management; and manage sustainable businesses linked to conservation. This presentation explored how community conservancies are having a significant impact on building peace, improving lives, and managing grasslands. These successes have helped to shape new government regulations on establishing, registering and managing community conservancies in Kenya, a key achievement of NRT’s efforts.
