In the Arid and Semi-arid lands (ASALs) of northern and coastal Kenya, pastoralist livelihoods are changing due to climate change, population age structures, and land degradation. These shifts in livelihoods are impacting peoples’ lives and affecting biodiversity conservation. The Northern Rangelands Trust Trading (NRT Trading) has a decade of experience working to empower communities, including the women and youth of the ASALs, to lift themselves out of poverty and achieve the goals of a healthy environment and thriving economies. We will present examples of our efforts, including our BeadWORKS business where 1,200 women are engaged in beadwork that harnesses the rich beading tradition of the women of northern Kenya; our progress in micro finance and entrepreneurship development to create sustainable local economies; an innovative vocational skills development program to bring women and youth into the economic mainstream; and our development of tourism in communities.
