Uganda is one of the 10 most biodiverse countries in the world, home to over half of Africa’s bird species and 40% of the continent’s mammal species. It is also one of the youngest nations in the world with over ¾ of its population under the age of 30, and an estimated 9.6 million people between the ages of 15 and 30. With the passing of Uganda’s new Wildlife Act of 2019, the relationship between economic development and environmental responsibility will be at the forefront of Uganda’s growth as a nation. Sudi Bamulesewa, African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) Uganda Country Director, plays an integral role in convening and communicating the shared vision of a prosperous and environmentally successful Uganda through interagency collaboration and community involvement. Examining the latest strategies Uganda is employing to harness its economic and environmental potential, this talk will highlight not only the challenges that Uganda faces but the potential for the Pearl of Africa to shine greater than ever before.
