Dr. Alex Piel, Co-Director of the Ugalla Primate Project, will share insights as to how best to protect the remaining endangered Eastern Chimpanzees populations in Tanzania.
Biography
Dr. Piel is a lecturer in Animal Behaviour at Liverpool John Moores University, UK. He has been working in western Tanzania since 2005, initially participating in a Wildlife Conservation Society-led biodiversity survey. He returned in 2006 to pilot test an acoustic monitoring system, before designing a modified version of the system for his dissertation, which he received in 2014 from the University of California, San Diego. Alex and his colleague and wife, Fiona, also lead survey and monitoring efforts of the Greater Mahale Ecosystem to prioritize areas for chimpanzee conservation.
