The Jane Goodall Institute through Gombe – Masito – Ugalla program initiated a pilot project to develop ways of arresting the rapid degradation of natural resources, especially the remaining indigenous forest around the Gombe National Park and along the shoreline of Lake Tanganyika in the Kigoma district. The area is widely deforested due to clear-cutting for cultivation purposes, the use of firewood for domestic and fish processing purposes, and additional pressure on natural resources caused by the influx of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi.
